Bryan and most of College Station cannot switch electric providers. The account is Bryan Texas Utilities or College Station Utilities. Lower the bill by cutting kWh and using the city program that matches the name on the statement.

Start with the right utility

Run the free planning audit with College Station Utilities, Bryan (BTU), or BTU serving a College Station address. If the bill already feels high, the home energy survey ranks likely causes and the rebate that matches.

Habits that cost nothing (cooling first)

Air conditioning is typically about half of a Brazos Valley electric bill.

  • Raise the cooling setpoint 2–3°F when nobody is home. West-facing glass gets blinds or solar screens from May through September.
  • Seal attic hatches, door sweeps, and obvious leaks. You are paying to dehumidify outdoor air that leaked in.
  • Wash full loads in cold water. Unplug spare garage refrigerators.

What not to do

  • Do not open Power to Choose for a BTU or CSU meter. That site is for deregulated territories.
  • Do not apply to SmartHOME if the bill says College Station Utilities, or to Energy Back II if the bill says BTU.
  • Do not lead with a certified passive house on an existing 1980s ranch. Envelope and AC first; passive standard is a new-build or deep-retrofit topic.

If the leftover bill is Atmos, not BTU or CSU

College Station houses that already dropped gas heat can still pay ~$46/month to Atmos for a cooktop they barely use. That is a meter fee, not a commodity. The Atmos cooktop vs Costco induction post walks two 2026 statements, a $100–$170 Nuwave, and 3-ply / 5-ply Costco pots.

If the bill says Entergy Texas

That is a different utility, mostly in southeast Texas — not typical Bryan or College Station city meters (Entergy does list Brazos County; read the bill). If you already have a qualifying home battery, Greater Grid’s Entergy Texas Battery Storage Solutions program pays up to $325/year for sharing stored energy at peak. Tesla Powerwall owners enroll via the Tesla Virtual Power Plant (Entergy Texas) page and the Tesla app. Entergy also runs EV Demand Solutions (off-peak charging rewards; waitlisted as of September 2026) and a voluntary whole-home Time of Day rate. BTU and CSU customers cannot enroll. See rebates and the Tesla charging article.

Renters

If you do not own the HVAC, use the renter playbook. Owner rebates will not pay out on a typical Aggie lease.
