Do not order a Tesla to save money until you know where it will plug in tonight. Home charging on the utility named on your statement is the whole thesis. The federal new- and used-EV credits ended for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025 (IRS Form 8936 instructions). What is left is electricity vs. gasoline, fewer shop visits, and a small referral perk you only get if you apply the link before checkout.

When you are ready to order, use https://ts.la/michelle831556 and confirm the live buyer benefit on Tesla’s page. Tesla’s Refer and Earn terms say a referral cannot be added after the order. If the site does not show a benefit before you pay, stop and reopen the link.

Work out charging before you buy

Home charging is what makes the Tesla cheaper. The Bryan H-E-B and College Station Superchargers are a backup, not a fuel plan. Do this on the driveway before you put down a deposit.

1. Read the name on the bill — zip 77845 is mixed

College Station’s zip 77845 is not one utility.

Name on the statementTypical addressesEV / off-peak tools
College Station UtilitiesMost of the cityNone. Flat municipal rate.
Bryan Texas UtilitiesBryan city, plus some College Station addresses (5% franchise fee)None. Flat municipal rate.
MidSouth Electric Co-opSome 77845 / Brazos outskirtsMidSouth Rewards lists a residential EV charger rebate up to $500 (one category per year, 90 days, funding can run out). Confirm on their page.
Entergy TexasPockets of Brazos County (Entergy lists the county). Not typical city meters.Off-peak EV rewards and a voluntary Time of Day rate — see below.
Bluebonnet or another co-opWestern / southern edgesAsk that co-op. Do not copy Entergy or MidSouth numbers onto their bill.

The logo on the statement decides every program. Do not enroll in Entergy because the zip is 77845.

2. Home charging is ideal — 120 V is often enough

A reserved plug at the house beats every public charger. Voltage follows miles per day, not the badge on the car.

What you havePlanning overnight (8–10 hours)Usually enough if you drive…
120 V household outlet (Level 1, ~12 A)about 3–5 miles of range per hour, so ~25–40 miles overnighta BCS commute, campus, errands — under ~30 miles/day with a buffer
240 V / 220 V (dryer-style NEMA 14-50 or a Tesla Wall Connector)a full daily recharge (often 200+ miles of range overnight)40+ miles/day, Sunday recovery after Houston, or two EVs on one house

U.S. homes are 240 V nominal; people still say 220 V. Same circuit class.

A 120 V garage, carport, or outdoor GFCI outlet is enough for a lot of Bryan and College Station driving. You do not need a four-figure install to “make the car work.” Step up to 240 V if the nightly 120 V top-up will not cover your week, if the only path is a long extension cord (do not), or if an electrician can reuse a dryer/welder location safely.

Walk the parking before you order:

  • Is there a working outlet where the car will sit overnight, on a circuit you can leave plugged in?
  • Is that circuit already loaded (garage fridge, freezer, shop tools)? A shared 15 A circuit will trip. Prefer a dedicated receptacle.
  • If there is no outlet, can a licensed electrician add 120 V cheaply, or do you need 240 V and possibly a panel upgrade?
  • Apartment, street parking, or most student housing: you do not have a charging plan unless the landlord or employer gives you a reserved plug. Workplace Level 2 can substitute. Supercharger-only usually does not save money here. See renters.

The federal 30C home-charger credit expired June 30, 2026. Budget the electrician at full cost.

In the Tesla app, set a charge schedule once you know the utility rule (Charging → scheduled / off-peak). In this climate, precondition the cabin while plugged in so summer soak does not come out of the pack on the drive to campus.

3. Check the utility for EV and off-peak programs

Ask the company on the bill — not a Houston retail brand — whether they have an EV charger rebate, managed-charging reward, or a time-of-day rate. Then charge on the schedule that program actually pays.

BTU and College Station Utilities: there is no residential time-of-use or EV off-peak discount. The kWh rate is the municipal rate day and night. Overnight charging is still the right habit (you are not stacking the car on top of 4 p.m. air conditioning), but it does not lower the cents per kWh. Do not open Power to Choose or copy an Entergy Time of Day plan onto a BTU or CSU meter.

Entergy Texas (only if the bill says Entergy Texas): two separate tools.

  1. EV Demand Solutions (Greater Grid) — weekday off-peak 7 p.m. to 1 p.m. the next day. Published reward: $20 e-gift card to enroll, then $20 per additional month for up to four months (up to $100). Tesla Model 3 / Y (and S / X) can enroll through the car; a Cybertruck is not on the September 2026 equipment list. As of this review the FAQ says the program is fully subscribed and taking a waitlist — do not count the $100 in your purchase math until Greater Grid confirms a seat. Seasons and opt-out rules change.
  2. Residential Service — Time of Day (RS-TOD) — a voluntary whole-home rate, not an EV-only meter. Needs approved metering. The tariff energy charge is much lower off-peak and much higher on-peak; fuel factor and riders still apply, so do not treat the off-peak energy line as your all-in rate.
    • Summer (May–October) on-peak: 1 p.m.–9 p.m. weekdays
    • Winter (November–April) on-peak: 6 a.m.–10 a.m. and 6 p.m.–10 p.m. weekdays
    • Overnight EV charging is off-peak. Afternoon air conditioning is on-peak in summer. A cooling-dominated Brazos Valley house can lose money on TOD even if the Tesla charges cheap at night. Run Entergy’s current RS-TOD sheet against a July or August bill before you switch. Leaving within a year can carry a $30 transfer charge.

Those Entergy programs are not BTU or CSU. MidSouth’s charger rebate is a co-op member program — also not BTU or CSU.

Schedule in the Tesla app once you know the rule: flat municipal rate → charge whenever the car is home overnight; Entergy EV waitlist seat → stay inside 7 p.m.–1 p.m. weekdays; Entergy TOD → keep house peak load off the on-peak window, not just the car.

The only line that usually pays for the car

On BTU (planning ~$0.115/kWh) and CSU (planning ~$0.12/kWh) you cannot shop a cheaper overnight plan. That is fine for a Tesla: municipal all-in rates here are already low. Using $0.12/kWh and a Model Y at about 3.5 miles/kWh:

How you fuelCost per mile12,000 mi / year
Home charging (BTU / CSU)~$0.034~$410
Texas gas, compact SUV at 28 MPG and ~$2.90/gal~$0.104~$1,240
Local Supercharger, Tesla member peak (~$0.40/kWh)~$0.114~$1,370

Home charging vs. that gas SUV is about $830/year ($1,240 − $410). A Model 3 at closer to 4.0 mi/kWh is about $360/year to “fuel” at the same home rate (~$880/year vs. the SUV).

Supercharging in town does not beat Texas gasoline. Published late-August 2026 peaks were about $0.39/kWh (Tesla member) at the Bryan H-E-B Supercharger (725 E Villa Maria Rd) and about $0.43/kWh at 1900 Texas Avenue South in College Station. Use those stalls for trips and errands. Confirm live $/kWh in the Tesla app — Supercharger prices move.

Expect the car to add about 3,500–4,500 kWh/year to the house meter (12,000 miles at 3.5 mi/kWh is ~3,400 kWh). That is a real line on a July BTU or CSU statement. Run the home energy audit so you see the extra kWh against your actual utility. The line-by-line EV vs. gas framework is the same math with national figures.

Maintenance, insurance, sticker, and residual

No oil changes, fewer fluids, and regenerative braking that stretches pad life. Planning range: $300–$600/year less in routine shop work than a comparable gas car, partly offset by faster tire wear (Teslas are heavy).

Insurance still runs about 10–20% higher on many EVs. On an $1,800/year baseline that is roughly +$200–$350/year. Get Texas quotes on the exact trim before you count a win.

Sticker prices (MSRP, before destination, tax, and options — confirm on tesla.com):

  • Model 3 from about $37,000
  • Model Y from about $40,000

A comparable new gas compact SUV often sits $5,000–$10,000 lower before destination. Both sides pay destination. Texas motor vehicle sales tax applies to the Tesla the same way it does to the gas car. There is no Texas state EV purchase rebate to close that gap.

Used-EV prices and residual values moved when the federal credit died. Planning range for a five-year hold: roughly even to a few thousand worse than the gas SUV, model-dependent. Do not treat a Tesla as a guaranteed store of value.

5-year planning range (mostly home charging)

Assumptions you can audit: $0.12/kWh, Model Y at 3.5 mi/kWh, gas SUV at 28 MPG and $2.90/gal, insurance +$275/year, maintenance save $450/year, purchase premium $6,500 (midpoint of $5,000–$8,000).

Line (12,000 mi/year)Midpoint vs. the gas SUV
Fuel / electricity (5 × $830)Tesla ahead $4,150
Routine maintenance (5 × $450)Tesla ahead $2,250
Insurance (5 × $275)Tesla behind $1,375
Purchase premiumTesla behind $6,500
Operating + sticker, before residualAbout −$1,500
Residual / depreciation~$0 to −$2,500 extra

That is a wash to a modest loss at 12,000 miles/year if you buy new and keep five years. Raise miles to 15,000 and the energy save is about $1,040/year ($5,200 over five years). The same midpoint is still about −$400 before residual. The new-car case turns positive when miles are closer to 18,000/year, or when the sticker gap is nearer $5,000 (base trim vs. a pricier gas SUV, or a used Tesla). Under ~8,000 miles/year, or if most charging is Superchargers, a cheaper gas car usually wins.

A used Model 3 or Y is often the cleaner money move in 2026: the used-EV federal credit is gone too, but the used price already reflects that, and the home-charging math is the same.

When a Tesla does not save money here

  • No driveway or reserved plug — apartments, street parking, and most student housing. Use the renter playbook; Supercharger-only driving at local peak rates is gas-priced electricity.
  • Buying the Performance or a loaded trim to “save on gas.” The operating win cannot cover a $15,000 options stack.
  • Counting on the old $7,500 credit, an Entergy waitlist reward, or a Texas rebate that does not exist.
  • Switching a BTU or CSU house to a Time of Day story you read on Entergy’s site. Wrong utility.
  • A Powerwall or solar quote mixed into the car decision. Entergy Texas battery / Tesla VPP money is not a BTU or CSU program. See rebates if the bill actually says Entergy Texas.

How to order without leaving money on the table

  1. Solve charging first. Confirm a 120 V or 240 V / 220 V overnight plug, estimate daily miles, and read the utility name on the bill. MidSouth members: check the charger rebate before you buy hardware. If the bill says Entergy Texas, check EV Demand Solutions (waitlist) and whether Time of Day helps the whole house. BTU and CSU customers stay on the municipal rate and just schedule overnight charging.
  2. Open https://ts.la/michelle831556 and stay in that session through checkout.
  3. Confirm the referral benefit Tesla displays for the exact Model 3, Model Y, or other product you want.
  4. Price insurance in Texas on that VIN/trim before you put down a deposit.
  5. If you cannot charge at home, rerun the table with Supercharger $/kWh — the savings usually disappear.
  6. If you already have a Tesla in the household, compare this link with a friend’s; Tesla pays the same class of buyer perk on any valid referral, and only one can be applied.

Tesla can change referral rewards, financing, and MSRP without notice. The dollars on this page are planning estimates for Bryan and College Station meters, not a quote.

Estimates on this site are for planning only. Confirm MSRP, referral benefits, and financing on Tesla’s site; confirm kWh cost and any EV or Time of Day program on the utility named on your statement; confirm insurance and tax treatment with the companies that issue those bills.
